MIGM History
December 08, 2009This is how it all started...
"Music is Good Medicine" began as a promotional marketing concept for a very large independent physician organization in the state of Hawaii in 1998. The organization had a campaign to promote its name and physicians in the community and Music was identified as... a vehicle that could reach out to all.
The concept, “Music is Good Medicine” grew into a community outreach program committed to promoting good health. The program’s outreach efforts included elementary, middle and high school visits, senior centers, shopping malls, health fairs and education seminars by top name local performers.
ColÅn, a popular local group of young musicians was one of many performers along with groups such as Ho‘onua, and Kanalo performed at venues targeted for the younger, and Musicians to the likes of Bruce Hamada & Jim Howard, Wade Cambern, Maila Gibson and many more played to other audiences.
Jake was introduced to the Music is Good Medicine program through performances with Coln. He took an interest in the concept and became spokesperson for the program delivering messages that people really should pay attention to living healthily everyday.
In 2004, the physician group who carried the program stopped supporting the concept. Although the official organization ceased, Jake continued to carry forth the program’s mission unofficially by visiting schools and senior centers independently.
After years of carrying out the Music is Good Medicine mission without a program, Jake decided to revive the program under Toastman Inc. In January of 2009, Jake officially began to create the Music is Good Medicine organization and took the Music is Good Medicine’s mission to the next level.
