Hawaii Kai Retirement and Assisted Living - Oahu, HI

December 23, 2010

On Dec. 11 Jake visited the Hawaii Kai Retirement and Assisted Living. The performance took place in their beautiful foyer, which was the perfect setting for the show.

Jake started off with one of his favorite Judy Garland songs, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” The residents were humming and singing along, to the beautiful cover.

In between songs Jake shared stories of his childhood and the inspiration behind some of his hits, such as: “Let’s Dance,” “Piano Forte,” and even a song he had written as a kid, about Kung Fu fighting.

Next was his original number, “Go for Broke,” dedicated to all the 442 Nisei Veterans. As Jake replicated the intricate drum cadence for the opening of the song, the hall went quiet and all eyes were on him.

The room rang with “Ooh’s” and “Ahh’s” as Jake told his famous story about performing with Better Midler and meeting the Queen of England.  The story was followed by his beautiful cover “In My Life.”

Jake ended his set with his upbeat song, “Me and Shirley T,” as well as a standing ovation from the crowd. It was such a great day and the residents were such a delight.

Mahalo to Jeanine Quizon for coordinating this great event.
