Wildest Show In Town - Oahu, Hawaii
July 29, 2009What do animals, families, food, and ukulele music have in common? That’s right it’s the Honolulu Zoo’s Wildest Show in Town! This is a series of summer concerts that occur at the Honolulu Zoo every Wednesday from June 10th to August 12th, featuring a different main performance every week. MIGM presented Jake for the Zoo’s July 29th event, from which all proceeds went to the children’s educational fund. The Wildest Show In Town is a community outreach family-oriented program that is aimed towards bringing families together through the festivities. This particular show included raffles, food vendors, coloring contest, and the main event, Jake’s performance.
Jake opened the show with his spicy tune, “Let’s Dance,” then slowed things down with his calm “Blue Roses Falling”. This song was inspired by one of his friend’s grandma who was severely ill and from the influence of her medication would have visions of blue roses above her bead where the petals would rain down onto her. This tune touched the whole lawn full of hundreds of individuals, families and children. He followed with another soft and beautiful tune, “Piano-Forte”, which was inspired by the sound of the piano. Right after this song, a stunning $900 Kamaka concert size ukulele was given away in a raffle drawing. After the ecstatic winner walked away with his brand new uke, Jake continued his performance with favorites such as “5 Dollars Unleaded”, “Me and Shirley T”, “Orange World”, and “Wes on Fours.”
Before Jake wrapped things up, he encouraged all the children in the audience to follow their passion, stay drug free, and to take care of their health. He stressed the importance of eating vegetables, drinking plenty of water, and to stay away from that junk food! Jake ended the show with a bang by playing his infamous, “While my Guitar Gently Weeps.” As soon as the performance finished, a swarm of people lined up in anticipation to get Jake’s autograph and a picture with him. Thank you to those who support the Music is Good Medicine Program and a warm mahalo to Barbra, Honolulu Zoo’s volunteer coordinator, and Roy Sakuma for continually organizing these events and allowing MIGM to take part of the show. Remember music is good medicine!
