Waiau Elementary School Performance - Oahu, HI
February 02, 2010The students of Waiau Elementary School in Pearl City are nothing short of talented. It was an amazing experience for the Music Is Good Medicine team to be surrounded with such rich Hawaiian culture. Seeing the student’s converse with not only the teacher but with their classmates in Hawaiian was remarkable. We enjoyed watching the students showcased their talents of Hawaiian songs and chants. The Waiau students were going to be a tough act to follow.
Jake proves once again that he can motivate and inspire any audience. He started off with the basic question, “Why is music good medicine?” As Skyla, a student at Waiau Elementary, simply put it, “Medicine makes you feel better.” Exactly! Our mission is to show people that music can make you feel better and that having a passion can make you feel better.
Jake quickly grabbed the student’s attention with his first number, “Lets Dance.” You could just see the amazement in their eyes. Many of them were clapping and air strumming along with him. After the first song Jake decided to give the students a quick lesson on the drums, about rhythm. Then he used his ukulele to teach them about Melodies and Harmony. The students quickly caught on, especially after Jakes improv of the Family Guy’s theme song.
After a quick question and answer session, Jake showcased his vocals with a few lines of “Part of Your World,” from Disney’s A Little Mermaid. As if that wasn’t exciting enough, Jake decided to end the day playing, “Crazy G.” By the end of the performance Jake had the students hyped up and ready to go out there and find their passion.
Special Mahalo to Kumu Lahela Igarta for helping coordinate this wonderful performance.
