St. Andrew’s Priory – Oahu, HI
April 06, 2010On April 6, 2010 Jake Shimabukuro and MIGM had the honor of visiting St. Andrew’s Priory School in Honolulu. Jake and the concert band of St. Andrew’s Priory School were a part of KHON2’s Wake Up Today Tuesday morning show. We would like to thank Gordon Tokishi for coordinating this event.
The show began as Gordon Tokishi, St. Andrew’s Priory School Band Director, led his 48 students into a song entitled, “Fan Fair and Dance.” The girls had the opportunity to showcase their talent as guest percussionist Jake Shimabukuro followed along.
The concert band, which consisted of the school’s best musicians, was working very hard in preparation for the upcoming Parade of Band Festival at Mckinley High School. Jake showed his support for their band by saying, “The girls sound fantastic and I am going to be rooting for them on Thursday.”
The morning show came to a conclusion as the concert band performed another song entitled, “Sing Sing Sing,” as Jake accompanied them on his ukulele. Following the show, Jake alongside MIGM had the opportunity to share more of his passion with the students.
Jake explained to the students that the ukulele is just an instrument in which he expresses his passion and love for music via different sounds. He told them that in order to create a beautiful sound you must express your emotions through your music.
As the day came to a close, Jake performed a song entitled, “Ave Maria,” for the students as the sound of his ukulele echoed throughout the cathedral while the sunlight beamed through the stain glass windows. This moment was incredibly beautiful.
