If everyone played the ukulele the world would be a better place

Music is Good Medicine

Queen Lili`uokalani Elementary School

May 15, 2009

Queen Lili`uokalani Elementary’s 97th Anniversary May Day was filled with color, celebration, flowers and Aloha; and Jake was invited to participate in the festivity.  Thank you to Pualani Wilmington, Queen Lili`uokalani’s fourth grade teacher, for coordinating this May Day event.  The program took place outdoors where the stage was shaded under a giant tree and the sun was glowing on the students with their unique outfits representing different cultures.  This small and humble elementary school consists of only about 138 students total. Their May Day theme was “Cherished are the Children of Hawaii” to remind the students that they are all a cherished part of the islands.

Each grade represented a different ethnic group to show the cultures that make up Hawaii and what makes Hawaii truly unique.  The program ranged from ancient Hawaiian chanting to a Chinese song of friendship to Jake’s ukulele playing and message.  Jake demonstrated some different styles of ukulele playing followed by his Spanish-influenced piece “Let’s Dance,” and then spoke to the children about music and passions.  Jake reminded the students of their school’s motto, “we are number one because we care” and said that they care because they carry a lot of love in their hearts.  Jake told them to continue to love the people around them because love makes the world a better place and will uplift those who feel loved.

Jake’s golden words of advice were to study hard in school, figure our what your passions are, and to stay away from drugs.  Jake concluded with “Crazy G” and took any questions the students had for him.  After the May Day program, parents and students alike talked to Jake and asked for his autograph.  Jake’s message sincerely left an impact on all their hearts and everyone was so appreciative to him for visiting their small school.  It was a bright and successful May Day celebration.
