If everyone played the ukulele the world would be a better place

Music is Good Medicine

Moloka`i High School - Moloka`i, Hawaii

December 18, 2008

Jake’s visit to Moloka`i brought back childhood memories since it is the home of his Grandmother. Jake has been to Moloka`i to represent the MIGM program a few times before. Thank you to Mathew Helm for welcoming the MIGM program back and coordinating this assembly.  This visit was for the older students, which included all the high school grades that filled the entire gymnasium. Molokai students really have a musical sense about them and love the ukulele. Jake set up for what was to be the final day of school before Christmas break, so as anticipated, the students were amped.

The host for the assembly wore an amusing reindeer hat, and many of the students were also dressed for the holidays. Jake set up on center stage as you could hear the roar of students turning the corner.  The students settled in, Jake plugged in, and launched it off with the always favorite “Let’s Dance”.  Between song sessions, Jake really connected with the students, being that Jake and them share a common past time of Moloka’i gatherings during the holidays. Jake truly conveyed the MIGM message and talked about his history and what inspires him as a musician. We always hope the message is reached and reciprocated, and with the Molokai students, you can feel that connection.

For the grand finale, Jake invited two students on stage with him and one instructor playing the Harmonica to a Bob Marley tune. To top it off, all of the students had a choreographed school dance they wanted to perform for Jake. It was a fun, high energy and high comedy experience that was memorable for everyone in the gym.
