If everyone played the ukulele the world would be a better place

Music is Good Medicine

Kaimuki High School Performance - Oahu, Hawaii

February 12, 2009

Bringing back memories, Jake played at his former high school and shared with the students his story and high school experience. In Kaimuki’s 600-seat auditorium, Jake played and spoke in front of a full house.  A special thank you to Mr. Darryl Loo, Kaimuki High School’s music teacher and a great friend and mentor to Jake, and Holly Soria, the Student Activities Coordinator, for creating this moving opportunity.

Jake shared his story of how he was uncertain of what he wanted to do with his life and had a rough point in his senior year of high school.  Then he realized that at least getting a High School diploma would benefit whatever it is he decides to do.  So Jake begged his teachers and principal to allow him to make up all his missed work had to work twice as hard.  After being so behind and working so hard to catch up, Jake was able to walk at his graduation and receive his High School diploma.  He encouraged all the students to stay in school, get their high school diploma, and do whatever they are passionate about.  Jake told all the students that graduating was the most incredible feeling he had ever experienced and it was something he accomplished that was not only benefiting himself, but his family and the community as well.

Jake performed several songs, and before his last song, he acknowledged Mr. Loo and shared what a great mentor he has been.  After Jake graduated, he kept in touch with Mr. Loo who has taught Jake a lot about doing beneficial things for the community without expecting anything in return.  Although Mr. Loo is retiring, he still plans to visit schools and encourage kids to follow their dreams.  As Jake said, he may be retiring from the school but he won’t retire from his mission.  Again a special mahalo to Mr. Loo and Wendy Okamoto for coordinating this special event.
