If everyone played the ukulele the world would be a better place

On Feb.9, 2010, Jake Shimabukuro graciously played his ukulele and spoke to over 300 high school students about the importance of having goals and finding their passion. It’s now over a week later, and I’m still pinching myself: Jake was actually here, at my school, playing on my stage! The man who played for the Queen of England, who has been all around the world, and who has played with other world-class performers, this man was able to take the time out of his busy schedule to motivate a packed-to-the-rafters group of high school kids who are still trying to find themselves.

Many of these students have attention-span issues, but not with Jake; you could hear a pin drop as he would “talk story” about how finding his passion allowed him to do all the wonderful things he does---and then, of course, he blew them away with his virtuoso talent. Plus, even though he had another deadline to meet, he stayed after to chat with students who just had to share with him. For the rest of that day (and many more after) I heard from students and faculty about how fantastic Jake was. I have no doubt that he influenced many kids (and created some new fans who now have an enlightened view of the ukulele!). I started to follow Jake’s career because of his talent; but as time has gone by, I’ve learned to appreciate how giving he is of his time and spirit. There is a quiet force to his personality that captivates all who listen to him. I know his visit to my school is one I will cherish for the rest of my life.
