DFS Galleria—Oahu, Hawaii
August 04, 2010
Last year’s DFS event went over so well that we had to do it again. So this year the Music Is Good Medicine team joined forces again with DFS Galleria and put together the first ever. “I LOVE UKULELE/JAKE DAY.”
To start off this event was Legacy. Legacy is a band that is near and dear to Jake. Legacy is comprised of former teachers and principals Jake had through his schooling at Kaimuki High School. They performed songs such as “Beyond the Sea,” “Que Sera Sera,” and a crowd pleasing Elvis, Beatles, Michael Jackson medley.
Next on stage were the extremely talented students from Mililani Elementary School. This lively bunch of students brought so much energy and passion to the stage. While they may be young, they certainly are talented. A few of the students even switched between playing ukulele and dancing hula.
In honor of “I LOVE UKUELE DAY,” Music Is Good medicine taught a fun jewelry making class for kids. We took Jake Shimabukuro’s used ukulele strings and along with some colorful beads, turned them into bracelets. After the jewelry making class, Ken Nishimoto from Pua Pua, and Bruce Shimabukuro came by and held ukulele classes. The classes were opened to all ages, so it was fun to see Bruce teach them all how to play “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.” Even after those lessons, Bruce still had an abundance of energy, as he got on stage and performed a quick set.
Next students from Ukulele Hale took the stage. The students ranged from beginners to advanced. One student even performed “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” a cover tune that Jake often performs. As they show cased their talents the DFS hall began to fill as the word about Jake’s performance had gotten out.
By 8pm the Galleria Hall was filled with people awaiting Jake’s performance. After Jake’s first number the hall shook with a thunderous applause. Spectators were even coming in from off the street to see what all the buzz was about. Jake’s performance showed everyone how powerful the love of an instrument can be. At the end of the night he not only brought together old fans, but he made some new ones as well.
Special thanks to June Higa, Noriko Harimoto and their DFS Galleria team. Bruce Shimabukuro, Ken Nishimoto from Pua Pua, Jody Kamisato from Ukulele Hale, Daryll Loo and Legacy, and Tom Yamamoto of Na Kamalii O' Iliani from Mililani Elementary School. Because of all your help, we were able to pull off this incredible event. Mahalo.
